Germany supports Vietnam in energy sector

The government of German supports Vietnam in applying smart electricity grids to develop renewable energy sources.

Deputy Prime Minister Pham Binh Minh has signed Decision 519/QD-TTg to approve the policy on investing in the project “The appliance of smart electricity grids for developing renewable energy sources and using the sources effectively” (SGRE-EE), which will be used by the ODA of the Germany government.

The project will be implemented from 2018-2022 across the country. It has a total investment of $6.3 million, including a $5.9 million ODA of the Germany government and a $356,260 counterpart fund from the Vietnamese Ministry of Industry and Trade.

The project will boost and support the development of renewable energy sources in the electricity system and smart electricity grids in Vietnam. It contributes to achieving the goals of the Vietnamese government’s the National Power developing Plan (PDP), Green Growth Strategy (GGS), and Green Growth Action Plan (GGAP), which are to ensure the supply of electricity and power quality and the sustainability of the electricity and energy sectors.

The main objectives of the project are to enhance the capacity of technology of smart electricity grids, develop renewable energy for state officials and management units and form a network of experts in the sector. It would also improve the cooperation and transformation of technology among the two countries’ universities, research institutions, and enterprises to develop renewable energy sources and boost the efficiency of using energy.

The Prime Minister has assigned the Ministry of Planning and Investment to send a diplomatic note to the German government about the decision of the Prime Minister. The Ministry of Industry and Trade noted opinions of the relevant agencies to complete, appraise and approve the project document and decide how to invest in the project according to the current regulations.
