The 2019 Population and Housing Census is the largest ever such study so far and will take place from April 1 to 25. This will be the 5th Population Census in the country, collecting basic information in order to help the research and analysis of the development of the population and housing throughout all cities and provinces.

The Central Population and Housing Census Steering Committee organized an opening ceremony of the Census of Population and Housing in 2019 on the morning of April 1 in Hanoi. The national-scale investigation will be undertaken with the participation of more than 122,000 enumerators who will come to every household to collect information regarding population, migration status, marriage, number of newborns and deaths and population growth, labor status and employment etc. The census is an important activity with a strong influence on people’s lives.

The results of the census will be used to evaluate the consequences of the implementation of socioeconomic development plans during the 2011-2020 period and help the government, ministries and localities develop strategies and plans for national socioeconomic development in the 2021-2030 period.

According to Mr. Nguyen Bich Lam, General Director of the General Statistics Office (GSO) and Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee for the National Population and Housing Census, collecting information in all cities and provinces is extremely important. Full and accurate information on population and housing will help the government build the right plans and strategies for the country’s rapid and sustainable development and bring prosperity and happiness.

According to the GSO, this census is the largest ever, taking place around the whole country and involving about 26.2 million households and over 94 million people. It will be organized into about 217,600 enumeration areas (not including those working in the Military, Police and people working in Vietnamese representative missions abroad. The three ministries of Defense, Public Security and Foreign Affairs will make their own investigations.)

According to Mr. Nguyen Doan Toan, Vice Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee and Head of the Steering Committee for the Population and Housing Census of Hanoi, Hanoi is one of two cities with the largest number of investigating units, with about 2.2 million households divided into 17,800 enumeration areas. To carry out this work, the city has appointed more than 12,000 statistical investigators to conduct direct interviews and collect information at each of these households in the area.

In Hoan Kiem district in Hanoi, the number of investigated units is 36,902 households divided into 312 enumeration areas. A total of more than 300 statistical enumerators, team leaders, and supervisors will perform the investigation.
