Vietnamese team LH-EST, from Lac Hong University in southern Dong Nai province, pushed the boundaries of energy efficiency at the Shell Eco-marathon Europe, with an achievement of 185km per kWh.

The team made a miraculous journey in the eco-marathon at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey, UK. Competing in this year’s race were 140 teams from 28 European countries, along with the Top 3 UrbanConcept teams in Asia and the Top 3 UrbanConcept teams in America.

Its first time participating in Shell Eco-marathon Europe in the UrbanConcept - Electric Battery category and the Drivers’ World Championship (DWC), LH-EST’s record of 185km per kwh was higher than its 170km per kWh at Shell Eco-marathon Asia in Malaysia in May.

Competing against the best teams from Europe and America, LH-EST was the only Asian representative in the Grand Final of the DWC. The winner was the first team to finish the race within their limited fuel.

“The real challenge and pressure of competition is much greater than in Malaysia,” Nguyen Thanh Trung, the main driver of the LH-EST team, said after the race. “In order to be selected for the DWC grand finals, the teams representing Asia and America had to complete all the requirements of the competition and compete with the all UrbanConcept teams from Europe, as well as record high results in the competing category.”

“We were really excited to have a ticket to the Grand Final and compete with the best teams in the world. The experience was very special for the team and what we are most proud of is that our self-developed vehicle was actually fuel-efficient.”

“What makes me cheerful is that the LH-EST team overcame many obstacles and surpassed its limits to achieve an impressive record in the UK,” said Mr. Tran Hong Van, General Manager of Shell Vietnam. “The organizers also acknowledged the efforts of the Vietnamese students, as we were one of the teams that traveled the greatest distance to the Shell Eco-marathon Europe.”

“Their success at this year’s race opens up a new chapter in the journey of finding and applying energy efficiency solutions for Vietnam’s younger generation. We are so excited and look forward to continuing to witness their incredible creativity.”

The Shell Eco-marathon DWC brought together the world’s best UrbanConcept teams in an exciting race to see who the worlds’ fastest energy-efficient driver is. This year, the winning team was Green Team Twente from the Netherlands, which will be awarded an unforgettable prize: an invitation to visit Scuderia Ferrari’s headquarters in Italy for the ultimate grand tour, where they will participate in exciting workshops and learn from the best at Ferrari.
