The International Day of Yoga will be celebrated this month in ten cities and provinces around Vietnam by the Embassy of India in coordination with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, and the Hanoi People’s Committee.

The day aims to introduce yoga as part of Indian culture and raise awareness worldwide about its many benefits, encouraging people to practice yoga and live a healthy life. It also helps to foster the India-Vietnam friendship.

With the theme “Yoga - Green for Life”, the main event will take place on June 22 at the Quan Ngua Sports Complex at 30 Van Cao Street, Ba Dinh district, Hanoi, featuring a mass yoga exercise with the participation of some 800 yoga lovers.

It also features diversified yoga practice with various positions, equipment, and treatment, including those winning local and international awards.

Similar events have been organized in nine other localities from the north to the south - Vinh Phuc, Da Nang, Dak Lak, Khanh Hoa, Ho Chi Minh City, Ba Ria Vung Tau, Can Tho, Tien Giang, and Soc Trang.

The embassy is also cooperating with the Bao Viet Life Corporation and the People’s Committee of these localities to organize charitable activities.

Yoga has been practiced by more and more Vietnamese people in recent years, according to Mr. Rajesh Uike, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy. Its increasing popularity in Vietnam connects people of the two countries, he believes.

Organized for the first time in Vietnam in 2014, the annual event is a festival for yoga local lovers and an opportunity for them to learn more. Last year, more than 1,200 people joined a yoga protocol performance at Hanoi’s Indoor Athletics Palace.

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental, and spiritual practice having its origins in India and aims to transform both body and mind. On December 11, 2014, the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga. The declaration came after the call for the adoption of June 21 by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his address to the General Assembly on September 27, 2014.
