Vietnam is expected to serve a total of 127 million passengers in 2020 at its 21 airports, a year-on-year rise of 10 per cent, according to the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).

The figure will include more than 46 million international visitors and 81 million domestic travelers. Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City is the largest in the country, accounting for about 30 per cent of total passengers.

Capacity could be higher if obstacles in the management of flight zones, land, and legal provisions in investment could be addressed to speed up projects upgrading aviation infrastructure, according to the ACV.

In 2020 it will focus investment on building T2 passenger terminals at Vinh International Airport in the north-central province of Nghe An and Cat Bi International Airport in the northern port city of Hai Phong, and a T3 passenger terminal at Tan Son Nhat.

The ACV will also carry out projects upgrading and expanding domestic terminals at Tan Son Nhat and passenger terminals at Lien Khuong Airport in the central highlands’ province of Lam Dong, which largely serves Da Lat.

It will also prepare for investment in passenger terminal projects at Da Nang International Airport in central Da Nang city and Cam Ranh International Airport in the south-central province of Khanh Hoa, and T2 passenger terminals at Dong Hoi Airport in the central province of Quang Binh and Tho Xuan Airport in the north-central province of Thanh Hoa.

The ACV will also invest in projects expanding aircraft aprons at Da Nang, Cam Ranh, Cat Bi, Phu Bai (Hue), and Noi Bai airports.

Vietnam welcomed a record 18 million international visitors in 2019, a year-on-year increase of 16.2 per cent, according to the General Statistics Office. The tourism sector also catered to 85 million domestic visitors, up more than 6 per cent. Total tourism revenue was estimated at over VND720 trillion ($31 million); an increase of more than 16 per cent.
