The American Chamber of Commerce in Hanoi (AmCham) honored its members’ best corporate social responsibility (CSR) programs on October 30 in Hanoi.

The fifth annual Amcham CSR Recognition Awards recognized 34 companies for demonstrating they understand the link between business operations and society and conduct business in a way that creates both long-term economic and social value in Vietnam.

The awards are designed to raise awareness about CSR among AmCham members and the community and to provide recognition to companies with best-practice CSR programs in the country. To qualify for an award, a company’s CSR program must receive high marks in four categories: attention to business objectives and societal needs, creation of long-term economic and social gains, communication and the sharing of best practice, and program sustainability.

In an address at the ceremony, AmCham Chair Ms. Natasha Ansell said that, in the past, businesses primarily concerned themselves with the economic results of their decisions. “Today, however, businesses must also reflect on the ethical, moral, and social consequences of their decisions,” she said. “CSR is no longer defined by how much money a company contributes to charity but by its overall involvement in activities that improve the quality of people’s lives.”

Reflecting on the great CSR programs that many AmCham members operate in Vietnam, Mr. Adam Sitkoff, Executive Director of AmCham, said that in the past executives viewed CSR as just another source of pressure from their corporate office. “But as customers, employees, and society placed increasing importance on CSR, many leaders now look at it as a creative opportunity to fundamentally strengthen their businesses while contributing to Vietnam’s development at the same time.”

Amcham CSR Recognition Awards were presented 3M, AES, AIA, AIP Foundation, Baker & McKenzie, BIDV - MetLife, Citibank, Coca-Cola, Crowne Plaza West Hanoi, Deloitte, Dow, ExxonMobil, FedEx Express, Ford, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Hanesbrands, Herbalife, Hilton Hanoi Opera & Hilton Garden Inn, Ho Tram Project Company, HP Technology, InterContinental Hanoi Westlake, InterContinental Hanoi Landmark 72, Johnson & Johnson, JW Marriott Hanoi, KPMG, Microsoft, Mondelez Kinh Do, Pacific Basin Partnership, Procter & Gamble, Regent Garment Factory, Savills, Suntory Pepsico, VinaCapital, and Visa.
