Developing online tourism and digital platforms present a host of opportunities for tourism growth in Vietnam, Mr. Vu The Binh, Vice Chairman of the Vietnam Tourism Association (VITA), told the Vietnam Online Tourism Day 2019 in Hanoi on June 26.

Figures from the Vietnam E-commerce Association (VECOM) show that growth in e-commerce in 2018 was 30 per cent higher than in 2017 and this pace will continue in the years to come, with trade of about $8 billion. Online retail and online tourism account for the highest proportions in the entire e-commerce market in Vietnam.

According to Google and Temasek, the scale of online tourism in Vietnam in 2018 reached $3.5 billion and is expected to be $9 billion by 2025. Plane ticket, hotel, and tour bookings and other tourism services online will grow rapidly.

Mr. Binh said the digital destination platform helps provide fast and useful information, offering varied, attractive services and encouraging tourists to visit. “Online tourism development will also support increases in GDP and employment,” he added. “It also provides an opportunity for everyone to participate, while service providers can sell more products and customers can enjoy better services.”

Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hung, Chairman of VECOM, emphasized that given digital technology has become increasingly modern, online tourism is more familiar among travelers and the behavior of travelers has changed. “Travelers actively seek destinations, book tours and hotels, and expand exchanges, connections, and reviews of destinations and services,” he noted. “These reviews spread rapidly and create reliability. Tourism businesses that are aware of visitor behavior and provide appropriate services will succeed.”

The Vietnam Online Tourism Day is organized to raise awareness among agencies, organizations, and businesses about the importance of online tourism and is an opportunity for those related to tourism, such as airlines, hotels, restaurants, resorts, tourism businesses, payment providers, and marketers to meet, exchange, and share experiences. Four sessions featuring expert comments help tourism businesses adjust their business strategies and effectively apply technology platforms and apps.

Within the framework of Vietnam Online Tourism Day 2019, VECOM and VITA also signed a cooperation agreement on training human resources for online tourism. VITA also signed a cooperation agreement with TikTok.

There was also an exhibition area for businesses to introduce general tourism support solutions and online tourism apps.
