Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson Le Thi Thu Hang was quoted by local media on August 8 as saying that Vietnam is resolutely preventing and strictly handling trade and origin fraud in the domestic market as well as export-import activities in a bid to protect the legitimate interests of local businesses and consumers.

According to a report from the Vietnam News Agency, Ms. Hang answered media questions on measures adopted to prevent foreign goods disguised as “Made in Vietnam” products being exported to the US, saying that Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc has ratified a project on strengthening State management over the prevention of trade remedy evasion and origin fraud.

The Prime Minister has instructed relevant ministries and agencies to implement a host of measures to raise awareness and intensify State management over export-import activities and foreign investment, observe legal regulations on trade remedies, origins and customs, and the prevention of trade remedy evasion, and mete out strict punishment for any violations.

She added that relevant ministries and agencies have seriously implemented the project and that the Ministry of Industry and Trade is compiling specific regulations and criteria to serve as a foundation for identifying actual “Made in Vietnam” products.

Customs agencies have also coordinated with other agencies to step up inspections and supervision of export-import activities, especially goods prone to trade fraud, which have been fully investigated and strictly handled.

Competent Vietnamese agencies have also enhanced cooperation and information exchange with their counterparts in foreign countries in order to detect, prevent, and handle trade fraud in export-import activities.
