Doosan Heavy Industries Vietnam exported 12 modules forming waste heat recovery equipment to the Ruwais Refinery in Abu Dhabi on September 9, helping it save on fuel and improve its operational efficiency.

The 12 modules are under the Waste Heat Recovery Project (WHRP) signed by Doosan Vina and Samsung Engineering Co. (SECL) on October 26, 2018 and part of a ten-year cooperation framework agreement inked by the two sides on June 29, 2018.

These giant modules are intensively fabricated and assembled by the material handling systems (MHS) and Water shops of Doosan Vina in collaboration with ten other subcontractors over more than six months.

“Doosan Vina manufactured this type of product for the first time, so we initially faced many difficulties,” said Mr. Young Sang Yoon, Erection Department Leader at the MHS shop. “The first was the short delivery schedule, the second was our lack of experience in production, and the third was the strict requirements of the customer.”

“However, with careful preparation, tight tracking of every stage plus the full efforts of our skilled workers and close supervision as well as support from SECL, we completed the project on schedule and met the required quality.”

Among the 12 modules, the largest is 32.75 meters long, over 12 meters wide, and 27.7 meters high, while the smallest module is 31 meters long, 6.5 meters wide, and 11.7 meters high.

To ensure safety and the equipment’s features, transportation to the vessel and reinforcement of its deck for the 1,746-ton modules were carefully calculated by Doosan Vina’s experts and submitted to SECL for approval before execution. Because of their heavy weight and huge size, experts had to use Self-propelled Modular Transporters (SPMT), with 20 employees completing the task in five days.

The successful completion of this first order for SECL is a source of pride for Doosan Vina in general and the MHS and Water shops’ employees in particular. It proved the technical qualification of Vietnamese workers and also created prestige for the company in the eyes of international partners in the field of manufacturing modules for petrochemical refineries.

Doosan Vina is a high-tech industrial complex at the Dung Quat Economic Zone in central Quang Ngai province employing 2,000 Vietnamese workers. The company supplies the mega infrastructure products that make modern life a reality.

Products include boilers for thermal power plants, desalination plants the size of a football pitch that turn sea water into fresh, material handling systems like cranes that are the heart of logistics at ports around the world, modularization and structural steel for refineries, buildings, and infrastructure developments. To date the company has exported products worth $2.4 billion.
