Hanoi ranked eighth among the 25 best global destinations in 2016, according to travel website TripAdvisor.

“The charming Vietnamese capital has aged well, preserving the Old Quarter, monuments and colonial architecture while making room for modern developments,” TripAdvisor wrote on its website.

“Hanoi may have shrugged off several former names, including Thang Long, or ‘ascending dragon’, but it hasn’t forgotten its past, as sites such as Ho Chi Minh’s Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison attest. Lakes, parks, shady boulevards and more than 600 temples and pagodas add to the appeal of this city, which is easily explored by taxi.”

The capital, though, slipped four places compared to 2015. Two other destinations in Southeast Asia - Ubud in Indonesia and Siem Riep in Cambodia - are also in top 10.

London was top of the rankings for 2016, followed by Istanbul, Marrakech, Paris, Siem Riep, Prague, Rome, Hanoi, New York, and Ubud.
