Country accounts for 5% of the more than 1 million foreign students pursuing college and university courses in the US.
There are 21,403 students from Vietnam studying in the US, making it the sixth-largest country of origin of international students in the country, up from ninth last year, according to the latest 2016 Open Doors report on International Educational Exchange released on November 15.
Vietnamese students in the US are primarily at the undergraduate level, with 15.1 per cent at the graduate level in 2015-2016, 67.2 per cent at the undergraduate level, 7.8 per cent pursuing optional practical training, and 9.9 per cent in non-degree programs such as English language or short-term studies, the report showed.
With an increase of 14.3 per cent compared to 2015, Vietnam has continued to make steady growth for more than a decade. “The significant growth of Vietnamese students attending university in the US shows the power and importance of people-to-people ties,” said US Ambassador to Vietnam, H.E. Ted Osius.
These students also serve as cultural ambassadors, he added, helping Americans better understand the Vietnamese people. And when they return to Vietnam they help people better understand the US.
The number of international students at US colleges and universities surpassed 1 million for the first time in the 2015-2016 academic year, an increase of 7 per cent from the previous year and standing at 1,044,000.
There are 85 per cent more international students studying at US colleges and universities than a decade ago and this marks the tenth consecutive year that Open Doors reported expansion in the total number.
International students now constitute just over 5 per cent of the more than 20 million students enrolled in higher education in the US, up from around 4 per cent in previous years.
The US hosts more of the world’s 4.5 million globally-mobile college and university students than any other country in the world, and more than double the number hosted by the UK, the second most popular country. In 2015-2016 there were nearly 69,000 more international students in higher education in the US compared to the previous year.
