Vietnam and Sweden celebrated 50 years of diplomatic relations (January 11, 1969 - January 11, 2019) at a ceremony on January 11.

Sweden was the first western European country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam. Vietnamese and Swedish leaders exchanged the warmest of congratulatory messages to mark the anniversary. The two countries have treasured their friendship and active cooperation over the past 50 years, most notably the anti-war movement in support of Vietnam started by the Swedish people.

“In 2019, many new steps in a strengthened partnership will be taken,” Swedish Ambassador H.E. Pereric Högberg said at the ceremony. “Looking ahead to a year with high-level visits, world-class cultural exchanges, an internet forum, and a joint Vietnam-Sweden Business Summit to be held in May, I’m certain that the friendship between our two countries will grow and develop. Our commercial, scientific, cultural and civil society relations will also continue to blossom.”

Both sides agreed that relations over the past 50 years have grown from strength to strength in all areas, from politics-diplomacy and trade-investment to culture-education, bringing about benefits to the two peoples. Both sides also affirmed the determination to elevate bilateral relations to new heights, for prosperity and the sustainable development of both countries.

The two sides stressed the importance of promoting economic, trade, and investment cooperation and spoke highly of the success of over 70 Swedish companies operating in Vietnam, such as ABB, AstraZeneca, Atlas Copco, Electrolux, Ericsson, H&M, IKEA, SKF, Volvo, and Tetra Pak.

Both sides expect that the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), which will be concluded and ratified shortly, will create new dynamics for bilateral economic relations. The Swedish Government is committed to providing long-term support for Vietnam’s economic development, through boosting trade, exchanging business solutions, and sharing Swedish experience.

The two countries affirmed the need for cooperation in multilateral mechanisms such as the UN, ASEM, and ASEAN-EU to further contribute to peace, security, stability, and development in the region and the world at large. Both are willing to continue to engage in dialogue and cooperate in dealing with global issues of mutual concern. Only by strong participation in the multilateral system can a functioning rules-based international world order be in place that stands up for global values and principles.

Within the framework of celebrations for the commemorative year of 2019, the two countries will work together to organize a range of important events, including exchanges of delegations at all levels, the hosting of the Vietnam-Sweden Business Summit in Hanoi, the ASEAN Business Forum in Sweden, the Vietnamese Art Gala in Sweden, the Vietnam Internet Forum, Vietnam Day in Sweden, a choir program performed by Swedish artists in Vietnam, and a number of education and training promotion programs.

The two countries are committed to working extensively to host various events to create new impetus for further cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
