Vehicle sales down again in July

Sales down 15 per cent against June and 27 per cent year-on-year.

Motor vehicle sales in July stood at 20,662 units, down 15 per cent compared to June and 27 per cent year-on-year, according to the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

Of the sales, 11,195 were buses, 8,489 were trucks, and 978 specialized vehicles. Bus sales were down 21 per cent, trucks 7 per cent, and specialized vehicles 7 per cent compared to June.

The production of domestic vehicles reached 14,779, down 14 per cent compared to June, while completely-built-unit imports totaled 5,883 vehicles, down 17 per cent against June.

In the first seven months of the year, total motor vehicle sales were 154,930 units, down 6 per cent year-on-year. Buses were down 2 per cent, trucks 10 per cent, and specialized vehicles 18 per cent.

Regarding origin, sales of domestic vehicles fell 10 per cent in the first seven months year-on-year while sales of imported vehicles increased 9 per cent.

The motor vehicle market saw significant price competition among car manufacturers in July. The price of Nissan’s X-Trail was cut by VND49 million - VND85 million ($2,155 - $3,739), with the X-Trail 2.0 2WD cut by VND65 million ($2,859) to VND933 million ($41,044), the X-Trail 2.0 SL by VND49 million ($2,155) to $43,946, and the X-Trail 2.5 SV 4 WD by VND85 million ($3,739) to VND1.11 billion ($48,390).

Nissan also offered incentives on purchases of its other models. Buyers of the Navara received a special hood and cash to a maximum value of VND45 million ($1,980), the Teana VND10 million to VND20 million ($440 to $880 million) in cash, and the Juke VND10 million ($440) in cash.

Toyota Vietnam, meanwhile, did not cut its prices but will cover the cost of vehicle registrations from July 1 to August 31. Fees for registering a Corolla Altis are VND40 million ($1,760) and the Vios VND30 million ($1,320). Customers who purchase any version of the Innova and pay in full will receive a one-year premium package valued at VND11 million ($484).
