Two former Ministers of Information and Communications in custody

Former Ministers of Information and Communications Nguyen Bac Son and Truong Minh Tuan were placed in custody on February 23 on charges of violating provisions on public investment capital management and use causing serious consequences, online newspaper VietnamPlus reports.

They were detained made under decisions and orders from the Ministry of Public Security and approved by the Supreme People’s Procuracy on the same day. The ministry is currently accelerating its investigation into the case in line with legal provisions.

The prosecution of the case began on July 10 last year.

Son was disciplined by having his status as former Minister of Information and Communications of the 2011-2016 tenure erased. On October 6 last year, the Party Central Committee of the 12th tenure disciplined Son by stripping him of his status as a member of the Party Central Committee of the 11th tenure and the Secretary of the Party Committee of the ministry of the 2011-2016 tenure. Son was also held by the Politburo to bear the main responsibility for the wrongdoings of the Party Committee of the ministry in the 2011-2016 tenure.

Son’s wrongdoings and those a number of other individuals are rated as very serious, causing a great loss of State assets, negatively affecting the operations and equitization of the MobiFone group as well as the prestige of Party organizations and the ministry, causing discontent in society.

Tuan has been removed from the post of Minister of Information and Communications. On July 12 last year, the Politburo decided to discipline him by giving him a warning and relieving him of the position of Secretary of the Party Committee of the ministry of the 2016-2021 tenure for his wrongdoings in leading, guiding, and implementing the MobiFone project to buy 95 per cent of the AVG Company.

On July 18 last year, the Prime Minister signed a decision disciplining then-Minister Tuan by giving him a warning. Later, on July 23, the State President signed a decision suspending him as minister, and on July 27 the Politburo issued a decision to put him in the position of deputy head of the Popularization and Education Commission of the Party Central Committee.
