State President Tran Dai Quang and his spouse will pay a State visit to Japan from May 29 to June 2 at the invitation of Japan, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko are scheduled to meet with and hold a State banquet in honor of President Quang and his spouse.

The President will also hold talks with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe.

Vietnam and Japan established diplomatic relations in 1973 and upgraded ties to an Extensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia in 2014.

The two have maintained high-level meetings, with the highlights being visits to Vietnam in 2017 by Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko as well as by Prime Minister Abe. Last year also marked a new development stage in bilateral relations as the two countries issued a joint statement on deepening the Extensive Strategic Partnership during an official visit to Japan by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc.

Vietnam and Japan have closely and effectively cooperated in multilateral forums such as the UN, ASEAN, APEC and ASEM.

Japan became the largest foreign investor in Vietnam last year, with total registered capital of $9.11 billion, or 25.4 percent of total foreign investment.

Japan was also the largest overseas development assistance (ODA) provider to Vietnam and the country’s fourth-largest trading partner, with two-way trade hitting $33.4 billion last year.
