“Geosciences and Earth Resources towards Sustainable Development” was the main topic of the Geology, Mineral Resources and Energy in Southeast Asia XV (GEOSEA XV) Congress held on October 16 in Hanoi.

This is a pressing issue for the globe in the context of climate change and sea level rises combined with geological hazards that threaten livelihoods, such as the earthquake and tsunami in Japan in 2011, the recent earthquake and tsunami in Palu in Indonesia, and landslides and flooding in countries including Vietnam, Minister of Natural Resources and Environment Tran Hong Ha told the opening ceremony of GEOSEA XV.

The congress is also a forum to share experiences and the latest achievements in science and technology and management in the field of geology, minerals and energy towards sustainable development.

On behalf of the host country, Mr. Ha welcomed domestic and foreign scientists, managers, and enterprises and said that GEOSEA, held every two years, is the leading event in geological science in the region. Vietnam is honored to host its 15th Congress this year.

The congress attracted government leaders, scientists, and managers from 21 countries and territories that are members of ASEAN or are strong in geological and mineral development, such as the US, the UK, Germany, Russia and Japan. Denmark, Canada, and China also attended.

It attracted more than 500 participants making over 300 presentations in all areas of geological science and resources, mineral processing, the environment, and minimizing the impact of natural disasters. Nearly half were reports presented by scientists, managers and representatives of businesses from different countries in ASEAN and the world, confirming the influence and positive impact of the congress on international cooperation in the field of geology, natural resources and the environment.

The objectives of the congress are to enhance cooperation and share experiences in the management and research of basic geological surveys, the exploration and exploitation of natural resources in the ASEAN community and other countries in the world, and the promotion of ASEAN cooperation in the field of minerals under the ASEAN Mineral Cooperation Action Plan 2016-2025.

In addition to plenary session, reports will be presented in 12 subcommittees, including Paleo centric - Stratigraphic - Agroforestry; Geology - Minerals; Magnetic Rocks and Metamorphism; Marine Geology; Geophysics; Geological Structure - Tectonics - Mineral Formations; Mineral Resources and the Mining Industry; Energy Resources and Processing; Hydrographical, Water Resources and Geological Engineering; Environmental Geology - Geological Heritage - Geological Parks; Geotechnical and Urban Geology; and Climate Change and Geological Disasters.
