Rooftop solar applications offer cold chain and aquaculture enterprises in Vietnam an economic solution to reducing energy costs in the long run, cutting down CO2 emission, ensuring energy security, greening the supply chain, and increasing competitiveness.

The benefits were discussed at a consulting workshop on rooftop solar photovoltaics (PV) for Vietnam’s cold chain and aquaculture sectors on September 14 in Ho Chi Minh City.

The event was jointly organized by the Vietnam Logistics Business Association and the Project Development Program (PDP) of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy within the German Energy Solutions Initiative.

Participating enterprises also received updates on Vietnam’s policy framework for solar energy projects, especially the net-metering scheme and development status of rooftop solar PV application. High energy-consumers from commercial and industrial operations in emerging markets like Vietnam usually lack the PV knowledge and experience to develop quality projects.

The PDP has been providing technical support for many private industrial enterprises to assess the investment feasibility of applying rooftop solar PV as well as support in project implementation and business partnerships with German solar companies.

One exemplary case in Vietnam’s cold chain sector is the 308 kWp rooftop solar system at Emergent Cold Vietnam in northern Bac Ninh province. Solar generation covers 15 per cent of its annual power demand and contributes to reducing 170 tons of its CO2 emissions.

The PDP is a regional program in Southeast Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa, commissioned and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy under the German Energy Solutions Initiative, which supports German companies in creating successful and context-adaptive business partnerships in foreign markets. In the Vietnamese context, it provides a range of services, for both participating German and local companies.

This includes sharing information, establishing contacts, support for showcase projects and marketing, awareness raising, and advisory services on the prevailing business conditions. In a country where there is a local infrastructure of German foreign trade promotion, for e.g. the Delegate of German Industry and Commerce (AHK), the PDP cooperates closely and contributes its energy and development expertise. This brings together the synergies, experience and networks of foreign trade promotion and development cooperation.
