The ASEAN Intergovernmental Commission on Human Rights (AICHR) held a workshop on November 7 and 8 in Ho Chi Minh City on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment through information communications technology (ICT) towards achieving the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The workshop is a priority activity for AICHR in 2019 and was organized with support from the Japan-ASEAN Integration Fund (JAIF).

It brought together specialized ASEAN agencies, regional and international organizations, and relevant people’s organizations, scholars, businesses, young people, and experts in the field of human rights to discuss cooperation frameworks that promote gender equality and the opportunities and challenges for women’s empowerment that come with developing information technology in the digital age. This is the first time AICHR has explored the aspect of information technology and digitalization in promoting and protecting the rights of vulnerable groups such as women.

Dr. Nguyen Thai Yen Huong, Vietnam Representative at AICHR, spoke of Vietnam’s commitment to promoting and protecting human rights within ASEAN. She hoped that the workshop would be the first step in opening up a forum for discussions on solutions to promote gender equality through information technology among ASEAN agencies, academia, international organizations, and stakeholders.

According to Dr. Amara Pongsapich, President of AICHR 2019, in the context of the rapid expansion of Industrial 4.0, promoting gender equality and empowering women in ASEAN will create many opportunities for these countries to continue joint efforts and contribute to the promotion and protection of human rights in the region.

Ms. Nguyen Nguyet Nga, Senior Advisor at the National Committee on ASEAN 2020, Honorary Chair of the ASEAN Women’s Community in Hanoi, and Representative of Vietnam at the ASEAN Women’s Group for Peace, said the workshop is timely as the tenth anniversary the AICHR is next year. This marks major efforts in ASEAN on promoting gender equality and women’s empowerment regionally and globally. She also spoke of a new approach to gender equality in the digital age, underscoring ASEAN’s major potential to take advantage of digital economic achievements and recommending actions to promote gender equality in ASEAN.

Three main discussion sessions were held together with a visit to FPT Software Corporation. At the end of the workshop, participants proposed a list of policy recommendations for AICHR representatives to refer to when doing their tasks that exploit information technology in the digital age in order to promote the advancement of women.
