Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc hosted a new year’s banquet in Hanoi on January 23 to mark the upcoming Tet (lunar new year) holiday, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reports.

Foreign ministry officials and representatives from foreign embassies and international organizations in Vietnam attended the banquet.

In his address to the gathering, the Prime Minister highlighted the socioeconomic progress Vietnam made last year.

Despite difficulties, including damage from natural disasters, the economy grew 6.21 per cent compared to a global average of 3 per cent. As many as 1.6 million new jobs were also created.

Inflation was kept under 5 per cent and total export revenue hit $176 billion, up nearly 9 per cent against 2015.

More than 110,000 companies were established, with total registered capital of almost VND900 billion ($39.6 million), the highest ever recorded. Vietnam attracted $15.9 billion in foreign direct investment, a year-on-year increase of 9 per cent.

It also welcomed 24 Heads of State and 10 million international tourists.

PM Phuc also thanked Vietnam’s partner countries and international sponsors and friends for supporting the country.

He was quoted by VNA as saying that the World Economic Forum 2017 forecast that this year would see a global recovery with opportunities offered by the fourth industrial revolution as well as challenges from protectionism, terrorism and climate change.

All countries must join hands to sustain peace, stability and cooperation in line with the UN Charter and international law, the PM stressed.

Vietnam, he went on, is committed to working closely with ASEAN member states to build a strong and dynamic community, noting that the bloc will celebrate its 50th anniversary of founding this year.
