Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc joined with other ASEAN leaders at the 34th ASEAN Summit, with the theme “Advancing Partnerships for Sustainability”, on June 22 and 23 in Bangkok, Thailand, to discuss measures to build a sustainable ASEAN community.

The gathering was the first high-ranking summit of Thailand’s 2019 ASEAN chairmanship.

ASEAN members affirmed the need to maintain sustainable security founded on the basic principles of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), ensuring the central role of ASEAN and the direction of dealing with external partners on the basis of ASEAN visions for the Indo-Pacific.

Leaders agreed to further promote intra-regional trade; to push for a seamless ASEAN, implementing the ASEAN Single Window and the ASEAN Smart Cities Network Initiative; to promote the digital economy and a digitized ASEAN during Industry 4.0; and to conclude negotiations on the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (RCEP) in 2019. The also selected 2019 as the ASEAN Cultural Year, to strengthen cultural exchanges and promote cultural identity within ASEAN.

Sharing his views with ASEAN leaders at the plenary session, Prime Minister Phuc expressed his support for the theme proposed by Thailand, adding that maintaining a long-term peaceful environment and sustainability are prerequisites for the development of the bloc. “But peace and stability do not come on their own, so we must work together to maintain solidarity and commit to being reliable partners and a strong community,” he said.

He underlined that ASEAN needs to give top priority to continuing to strengthen its solidarity and cohesion and promoting the central role and the efficiency of ASEAN-chaired and -led regional mechanisms.

ASEAN should boost intra-economic links, utilizing existing commitments and signed agreements, quickly conclude the RCEP talks, create a favorable business environment, improve the capacity of responding to Industry 4.0’s opportunities and challenges, and connect and develop Industry 4.0 technological center networks.

Prime Minister Phuc also proposed ASEAN continue enhancing cooperation in aspects that will bring practical benefits to the people, accelerate institutional reforms, and improve the efficiency of the bloc’s apparatus.

He also held bilateral and multilateral meetings with leaders of ASEAN members, as well as some Thai groups, to discuss major investment projects applying technology and boosting the export of Vietnamese goods in the future.
