Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc attended the ASEAN - Republic of Korea (RoK) CEO Summit hosted by the RoK in Busan on November 25 as part of the ASEAN - RoK Commemorative Summit.

The Summit was attended by more than 500 business leaders from the host country and ASEAN members, including Vietnam.

The governments of Vietnam and other ASEAN member states create the best conditions for businesses to boost connectivity and promote creativity to realize their business initiatives in the ASEAN market, with a population of 630 million people and total GDP of nearly $3 trillion”, Prime Minister Phuc was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) as saying in his address.

He expressed a hope that enterprises will cooperate with governments to promote the application of science and technology achievements so as to create breakthroughs in development, especially in the context of Industry 4.0.

He believes that the “New Southern Policy” initiated by RoK President Moon Jae-in will contribute to elevating relations between ASEAN and the RoK to a new high, as the RoK has pledged to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with ASEAN to develop the ASEAN Community 2025 towards the common goal of peace and prosperity in East Asia.

The policy is also expected to help increase two-way trade between the RoK and ASEAN from $160 billion in 2018 to $200 billion in 2020, he said, adding that Vietnam and the RoK are striving towards $100 billion in trade next year.

ASEAN and the RoK need to accelerate multilateral trade through upgrading the ASEAN - RoK Free Trade Agreement, contributing to boosting investor confidence as well as encouraging them to expand production and business in the fields of sustainable infrastructure, green energy, and IT, Prime Minister Phuc emphasized.

He said he is looking forward to seeing more investments from both sides in environmentally-friendly technologies, climate change response, natural disaster mitigation, disease prevention and control, and water management, among others, to ensure that future generations will have better lives.

As the ASEAN Chair in 2020, Vietnam, together with other ASEAN members, welcomes RoK businesses who follow the “New Southern Policy”, with a view to enjoying thriving cooperation with ASEAN - a community of peace, friendliness, openness, and dynamism, he underlined.

Vietnam’s ranking in business environment improvements by international organizations has moved up, and the country will continue its efforts to facilitate the business operations of all enterprises in the country, he added.

Prime Minister Phuc earlier visited a Vietnamese booth at the ASEAN - RoK Business Expo, themed “Invest ASEAN 2019”, VNA reported.
