Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc joined heads of State and government leaders of 18 countries and territories at the opening ceremony of the first China International Import Expo (CIIE) held in Shanghai on November 5, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reports.

Prime Minister Phuc was quoted by the State-run news agency as telling the event that the global economy has maintained its growth trend and Industry 4.0 is spreading to each country and territory, enterprise, and individual, thus opening up cooperation opportunities while also presenting new challenges.

Trade disputes continue developing in a complex manner, he went on, requiring parties conduct dialogue, intensify trust, abide by international law, and boost cooperation on an equal footing.

He affirmed that Vietnam appreciates China organizing the 2018 CIIE, which reflects the country’s thinking on mutual benefits and win-win cooperation and fosters economic and trade collaboration and creates strong motivation for economic growth in the region and the world.

In the current context of globalization, a single nation cannot develop by its own without opening up its doors, integrating, and connecting with others, he affirmed.

As a close and friendly neighbor of China, Vietnam always attaches importance to solidarity and cooperation with the country and wants to work with it to boost sustainable and win-win economic and trade economic development, Prime Minister Phuc said.

He reiterated Vietnam’s support for an open, fair, transparent, inclusive, and rules-based multilateral trading system with the WTO as the foundation, as well as its commitment to creating a favorable business environment and contributing to peace, stability, cooperation and development in the region and the world.

The Prime Minister took the occasion to brief those in attendance on Vietnam’s socioeconomic and international integration achievements, and confirmed that the country always welcomes foreign enterprises.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, as quoted by VNA, said the CIIE demonstrates China’s backing of trade liberalization and market opening. He affirmed that through the organization of the expo, China is willing to join hands with other nations to build a new forum for economic and trade cooperation, protect the multilateral trading system, and promote more open and inclusive development in the global economy.

The CIIE is one of the four largest external events of China in 2018, with the participation of over 3,000 enterprises from 130 countries and territories, including Vietnam, which, as one of the expo’s “guests of honor”, has a national stall showcasing outstanding products from 25 prestigious enterprises in the fields of agricultural products, seafood, processed food, and trade services, according to VNA.

Within the framework of the event, Vietnamese enterprises are expected to hold seminars and exchanges with partners from China and other countries and territories to expand cooperation opportunities.

During a meeting with Mayor of Shanghai Ying Yong, Prime Minister Phuc welcomed Shanghai firms to do long-term business in Vietnam, especially in high-tech support industries and logistics, according to another report from VNA.

He affirmed that the Vietnamese Party, government, and people treasure the development and enhancement of friendly neighborliness and comprehensive cooperation with their Chinese counterparts, and support the exchange and cooperation with Chinese localities, including Shanghai.

He asked Shanghai to facilitate all-level visits and existing cooperation mechanisms with Ho Chi Minh City and to actively study the extension of new cooperation mechanisms with Vietnamese ministries, agencies, and localities, especially in fields where Shanghai has strengths and Vietnam has demand.

The Prime Minister expressed his wish that Shanghai will assist Vietnamese firms in attending the CIIE and make it easier for Vietnam’s agriculture, forestry and fishery products to stake out a presence in Shanghai and, more broadly, China.

He applauded Shanghai and Vietnamese localities for holding people-to-people exchanges and assisting Vietnam in personnel training.

Mayor Ying, for his part, said he greatly values the traditional friendship and mutually-beneficial collaboration with Vietnamese ministries, agencies, and localities.

He expressed his hope of expanding coordination with Vietnamese localities to push forward the effective and practical development of bilateral economic-trade and tourism ties, contributing to strengthening the China-Vietnam comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.
