A range of important documents were signed by Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc and visiting Nepalese Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli during the latter’s visit from May 9 to 13 that will lay the foundation for the two countries to continue expanding bilateral cooperation.

At official talks in Hanoi on the morning of May 11, both sides expressed a shared vision of deepening the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Nepal in all regards.

Documents signed during the visit include a visa exemption agreement for diplomatic passport holders and official passport holders between the governments of the two countries, a memorandum of understanding to establish a bilateral consultative mechanism between the two foreign ministries, and a letter of intent on negotiating and signing a framework agreement on trade and investment cooperation between the Ministry of Industry and Trade and Nepal’s Ministry of Industry, Trade and Supply.

Prime Minister Phuc expressed his appreciation of the results of the Vietnam - Nepal Business Forum, which was held on May 10 with the direct participation of Prime Minister Sharma Oli. The two sides agreed to assign relevant ministries and agencies to study and establish new and practical cooperation mechanisms on economy, trade and investment, as well as to encourage enterprises to survey each other’s markets and deploy linking and trading activities.

The Vietnamese prime minister asked Nepal to support Vietnamese businesses in exploring investment opportunities in all sectors of its economy, especially energy, infrastructure, and telecommunications. The Nepalese prime minister, meanwhile, asked Vietnam to create favorable conditions for its goods to enter the local market.

Agriculture is an area with great potential for development, and based on that it was agreed to consider proposals to open markets for agricultural products in each country, especially for rice, pepper, cashew nuts, rubber, and fruit, as well as to promote information exchange, expand cooperation in high-tech agriculture, and exchange agricultural experts.

The two sides also agreed to increase exchanges and cooperation in the fields of culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, encourage Vietnamese tourists to visit the Land of Buddha - Lumbini and Mt. Everest in Nepal, and to encourage Nepalese citizens to visit Vietnam’s famous landscapes. The Vietnamese side agreed to promote the establishment of the Vietnam-Nepal Friendship Association in Hanoi.

Cooperation in other areas of potential, such as science and technology, information and communications, and aviation connectivity, as well as security, logistics and disaster prevention, will also be promoted by the two countries in the future.
