A National Steering Committee will be established to address incidents relating to cyber security, following a newly-approved decision from the Prime Minister, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

Under the decision, the committee will be able to direct the Ministries of Information and Communications, Public Security, and National Defense, together with relevant agencies, to cooperate in resolving cyber attacks immediately.

The Ministry of Information and Communications has been tasked to be the standing body of the committee and must decide on plans to deal with such incidents.

In March last year, websites at Tan Son Nhat International Airport in Ho Chi Minh City, Rach Gia Airport in Kien Giang province, and Tuy Hoa Airport in Phu Yen province were hacked.

Last July, cyber attacks occurred at Noi Bai and Tan Son Nhat International Airports. Hackers managed to display images and text on information screens at check-in areas insulting Vietnam and the Philippines regarding the East Sea dispute. The official website of Vietnam Airlines was also hacked and replaced by similar images and text.

The incidents raised questions about Vietnam’s cyber security preparations.
