Ambassador of Indonesia in Vietnam, H.E. Ibnu Hadi, revived the spirit of friendship between Indonesia and Vietnam on the occasion of Indonesia’s National Day on August 17.

The Ambassador noted the shared history between two countries, with independence coming in the same year of 1945. Both countries proclaimed their respective independence following World War II: Indonesia on August 17 and Vietnam on September 2. “Our founding fathers, Sukarno of Indonesia and Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, were close friends,” Ambassador Hadi said. “Distant though our countries may be, our hearts are not. For friends we are, and brothers are we.”

August is therefore a special month for Indonesia: the month of its independence. It is the month where the red and white of Indonesian flags adorn all corners of the country as well as in all Indonesian missions around the world, including in Hanoi and in Ho Chi Minh City.

The celebration of the anniversary of the Indonesian Independence Day on August 17 is even more joyful as it comes together with the opening ceremony of the 18th Asian Games on the day after, August 18. Indonesia is proud to be the host country for the second time, with the theme “Energy of Asia”. “We expect that the image, the face, the charm, the friendliness and the hospitality of Indonesians will be clearly shown and felt by our international friends through this very important occasion,” said Ambassador Hadi. “Through sports and through the 18th Asian Games, friendship and solidarity will be further strengthened, not only between athletes but also people-to-people throughout the Asian continent. Let Indonesian and Vietnamese athletes and people contribute to this noble cause.”

This year, the Indonesians are in the mood for celebration, but at the same time are saddened by the loss caused by the earthquake on Lombok Island early August, which killed and injured hundreds of people. Natural disasters have also happened in other parts of the world recently, including countries in ASEAN. The Ambassador said he appreciated the sympathy and concern expressed by the Vietnamese Government and its people with Indonesia.

This year also marks the fifth anniversary of the Indonesia - Vietnam Strategic Partnership, agreed upon in 2013. The Ambassador showed the progress of bilateral cooperation in line with the Plan of Action 2014 - 2018. Total bilateral trade in the first six months of 2018 reached nearly $4 billion, an increase of 24 per cent against the same period last year. It may reach $8 billion for the year, which would be an increase of 20 per cent. Investment from Indonesia to Vietnam rose 36 per cent in 2017 while investment from Vietnam to Indonesia also increased significantly.

In tourism, the number of visitors from both sides visiting Indonesia and Vietnam may reach 150,000 people and is increasing. Overall, in trade, investment, and tourism, indicators show a positive direction and there is optimism over achieving the bilateral trade target of $10 billion by 2020, according to Ambassador Hadi.

He also appreciated the official visit by General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Nguyen Phu Trong to Indonesia in August 2017. The previous visit by a General Secretary was by Ho Chi Minh in 1959.

The August 2017 visit was successful, with many achievements strengthening bilateral cooperation in trade, education, maritime issues and agriculture. Indonesia is now preparing for an official visit by Indonesian President to Vietnam, to be held in conjunction with the World Economic Forum on ASEAN: Industry 4.0 in September in the country. The visit will foster bilateral relations between Indonesia and Vietnam in all fields, according to Ambassador Hadi. “As the Indonesian Ambassador to Vietnam, I am privileged to have good cooperation, support, and friendly relations with Vietnamese Government officials, counterparts, friends and all stakeholders and we put our best efforts into forging good relations between the two countries. We celebrate it in solidarity and brotherhood with solemnity and in the spirit of ‘Energy of Asia’. ‘Mai’ Indonesia - Vietnam; Forever Indonesia - Vietnam!”

He also said that the Mascots of the Asian Games 2018 in the roadshow of the Jakarnaval Festival in Indonesia play an increasingly important role. As the country with the biggest Muslim population, the third-largest democratic country in the world, the 16th largest economy in the world, and the prominent Southeast Asian country, Indonesia has been consistently contributing positively to peace, stability and prosperity in the region and in the world. Indonesia is the largest economy in Southeast Asia and the only G20 member country from the region. In 2017, its GDP hit a milestone in reaching $1 trillion and counting.
