Hanoi will introduce iParking at an additional 118 parking lots and nine streets in four districts from September 1 if approval is forthcoming from the Hanoi People’s Committee.

The move was agreed to between the Department of Transport and related agencies after surveys were conducted on expanding iParking in the districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da, and Hai Ba Trung.

Ninety-one of the 118 lots where charges apply are managed by the Hanoi Parking Company.

The Department of Transport has proposed two options in deploying iParking.

The first is keeping the number of parking lots as is and introducing charges for the service from September 1. This option would provide employment but be difficult to manage and ensure traffic order and safety.

The second option is for the Department of Transport to take the parking permits at all 118 parking lots and hand them over to the Hanoi Parking Company. This would have a negative effect on some existing employees but be easy to manage.

The Department of Transport previously coordinated with police in Hanoi and other related bodies to survey all existing parking lots and roads with a width of at least 14 meters to determine eligibility to deploy iParking.

From May 1, pilot iParking services were conducted at parking lots on Tran Hung Dao and Ly Thuong Kiet streets. According to a report from the Hanoi People’s Committee, the pilot was more effective than traditional methods and contributed to the local budget.

iParking is the first application to be used in support of car parking, with payments made by smartphone. Users can register multiple cars at the same time on one account, choose a parking spot by scanning the QR Code at the spot, or quickly enter a parking code on the application.

The number of spaces at each parking lot is continuously updated in real time and fees are calculated according to management regulations.
