Speaking at a regular press conference on April 3 following the March cabinet meeting, Minister and Chairman of the Office of the Government Mai Tien Dung confirmed that the government places top priority on ensuring macro-economic stability and sustainable growth, with a focus on promoting rapid growth in mining and agriculture.

The minister, who is also the spokesman for the government, was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency as saying that drastic measures will also be implemented to deal with bad debts and inefficient banks, while developing the private economic sector and mobilizing resources from the sector for development investment.

The government will continue giving priority to making it easier for enterprises to expand production and business, he said, adding that the disbursement of investment sources will be accelerated for both the State-owned and private economic sectors.

Ministries, sectors, and localities were asked to implement the government’s Resolutions No.19 and 35, towards improving the business climate and the country’s competitiveness, and to further support enterprises’ development.

Deputy Minister of Planning and Investment Dao Quang Thu attributed the first quarter’s low GDP growth of 5.1 per cent to a decline in the mining sector’s growth.

Macro balances in finance and budget were ensured in the first three months, he added, inflation was curbed, and the numbers of newly-established enterprises and others resuming operations increased, showing businesses’ increasing confidence in the business climate.
