The ongoing Facebook imbroglio is a warning for Vietnamese internet users, Associate Professor Hoang Phuoc Thuan, Head of the Department of Network Security at the Ministry of Public Security, told Security World 2018 on April 5.

He said that Facebook passed on the user data of 80 million accounts to a hacker, not 50 million as originally announced, and social networking in general is experiencing turbulent times. “Misleading, malicious, lewd, depraved, and violent images are now easily found online,” he added. “A lot of information is dishonorable and undignified, which affects security and order. These are serious problems.”

Extremism is also being spread online. Vietnam faces three major security and information security issues, Dr. Thuan said: the massive scale of cyberattacks, the intense focus on areas of weakness, and the targeting of national works.

Preventing network attacks, cybercrime, and the emergence of new threats are global concerns. Security World 2018 aimed to capture the situation in security and information security in Vietnam and other countries in the region, and provided a venue for the exchange of experience and the introduction of advanced security solutions.

Experts said Vietnam’s IT sector has made great progress in recent times, contributing to the country’s development. The application of IT has gradually become a priority for the government, businesses and individuals and plays a key role in any industry.

The ease of connection by others, however, creates risks that result in a lack of information security and the spreading of negative information.
