Belgian Ambassador H.E. Paul Jansen paid an official visit to south-central Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan provinces from January 9 to 11 to hear of the progress made in Belgian-funded projects.

In Binh Thuan, after meeting with local authorities, Ambassador Jansen and a Belgian delegation visited a solar energy project in Ham Thuan Bac district; a pilot project under the Green Growth Strategy Facility (GGSF). They also attended the inauguration of the “Dykes against erosion/landslides on the Luy River’s banks” project in Bac Binh district.

They visited some of the related works and spoke with beneficiaries of the “Integrated Water Resource Management and Urban Development in Relation to Climate Change in Binh Thuan Province (2014-2019)” project.

The Belgian delegation also met some household beneficiaries of the Vietnam-Belgium micro-credit project of the Vietnam Women’s Union in Tan Lap commune, Ham Thuan Nam district. The credit project was carried out in three phases, from 1997 to 2012.

The Belgian Government has provided funding of nearly VND45 billion ($1.9 million) to the project and more than 52,000 poor women have accessed credit and business development services. The project has contributed to enhancing gender equality, improving the position of underprivileged rural women in family and society.

Though the project wrapped up in 2012, the Credit Support Fund was maintained and further developed by the Vietnam Women’s Union, operating professionally and more effectively and even attracting private investors.

In Ninh Thuan, after meeting local authorities, Ambassador Jansen and the delegation made a site inspection of the Cau Ngoi flood drainage channel, which is due to open very soon.

Since 2005, Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan have been selected by the Belgian Development Cooperation for support in the fields of irrigation, sanitation, and environmental protection. The current cooperation program implemented by the two provinces has focused on water management in order to adapt to climate change and bolster green growth.

Enabel, the Belgian Development Agency, is responsible for implementing all projects under bilateral cooperation at the governmental level.

Ambassador Jansen is looking forward to the positive changes brought about by the Belgian-funded projects and welcomes the close and effective cooperation among authorities at all levels in Binh Thuan and Ninh Thuan in implementing projects.

Over the last four decades, the Belgian Development Cooperation has supported Vietnam in a number of areas such as infrastructure-focused projects, poverty reduction, and social development programs.

With Vietnam’s “Doi Moi” policy of opening up, Belgium has set a priority on supporting the country in education, public health, water, and sanitation, to tackle any social vulnerabilities during the process of economic reform.

The current Indicative Cooperation Program of $66.8 million focuses on the areas of governance, water management, and urban planning in the context of climate change and green growth.
