The ASEAN Chief Information Officer and Chief Security Officer Awards 2017 (ASEAN CIO|CSO Awards) were held on October 6 to honor 26 leading CIOs and CSOs making outstanding contributions in IT & Information Security in Vietnam and Southeast Asia.

The Awards brought together IT & Information Security leaders from Vietnam, the Philippines, Cambodia, and Myanmar who are CIOs and CSOs of governmental organizations, civil organizations, and enterprises operating in the fields of finance, education, health, and telecommunications, among others.

Projects they have been involved in include VTV Go (VTV Digital - Vietnam Television), the National Admissions Portal (ICT Department at the Ministry of Education and Training), vConnection (VNPT Technology), Homecredit Mobile Application (Homecredit VN), and the FLEXCUBE Universal Banking Solution (KBZ Bank from Myanmar).

In the era of the fourth industrial revolution (Industry 4.0), IT & Information Security has become crucial to the sustainable development of enterprises and organizations. For that reason, the ASEAN CIO|CSO Awards, organized annually since 2005, identifies and honors outstanding individuals throughout ASEAN who led in IT and Information Security with distinction, contributing to their enterprise or organization and the community in an effective manner.

With a 12-year history, the ASEAN CIO|CSO Awards have become an important annual event gathering together and recognizing brilliant CIOs and CSOs.

The event is also an opportunity for the IT & Information Security community to remain updated on the latest developments in the field and share aspects of their vision and their responsibilities regarding technology and business issues.

The Awards this year honored 26 CIOs and CSOs from Vietnam and ASEAN, including nine CIOs in the government sector in Vietnam, from four ministries, three local departments, one People’s Committee (Da Nang), and one Committee (the Financial Supervisory Information Center), five CIOs from the enterprise sector, from two State-owned enterprises, two private enterprises, and one foreign-invested enterprise, and five CIOs from the foreign sector, from four financial and banking enterprises and one telecommunications enterprise.

The Board of Judges (BoJ) comprised 16 senior ICT leaders from the National Committee on IT Application, the Office of the Vietnam Central Party Committee, the Ministry of Finance, the General Department of Logistics & Technology at the Ministry of Public Security, and the Vietnam Government Information Security Committee, as well as high-profile leaders from multinational and Vietnamese ICT enterprises, among others.

The evaluation process went through the following phases: nomination / application, verification, face-to-face interviews, and two evaluation meetings.

The evaluation of potential winners was based on separate evaluation criteria for CIOs and CSOs and marked in three levels: Excellent (3 points), Good (2 points), and Average (1 point). The final grading is the average of all marked criteria after the BoJ’s evaluation meeting.

The evaluation criteria for CIOs were scale of organization, the candidate’s qualifications and experience, highlight projects, and social responsibility. The criteria for CSOs, meanwhile, were scale of organization, the candidate’s qualifications and experience, positive impact on the activities of the organization, information security performance and consequences, and social responsibility.

The ASEAN CIO|CSO Awards 2017 acknowledged improvements and developments in planning, building strategies, strategic vision, implementing and improving information security in order to ensure information and data protection, as well as working processes in organization and leadership.
