Vietnam earned about $9 billion in seafood export revenue in 2018, an increase of 8.4 per cent against 2017, according to the General Directorate of Fisheries at the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

The result was released at a conference held on December 24 in Hanoi to review the Directorate’s performance in 2018 and launch tasks in 2019.

Of the figure, export revenue for pangasius or tra fish hit $2.26 billion, up 26.4 per cent year-on-year, while export revenue for shrimp fell 7.1 per cent to $3.58 billion, including $2.48 billion for white-leg shrimp, down 2 per cent, and $810 million for tiger shrimp, down 7.8 per cent.

Export value rose 13.9 per cent to $675 million for tuna, 15.5 per cent to $1.52 billion for other kinds of fish, 9.1 per cent to $785 million for mollusks, and 23 per cent to $145 million for crustaceans.

Seafood output is estimated to have reached nearly 3.6 million tons this year, up 5.96 per cent against last year.

For 2019, the sector has set a target of increasing seafood production value by 4.25 per cent compared to 2018. Total output is expected to hit 7.9 million tons, while export revenue should bring in $10 billion, up 11.1 per cent.

To achieve these goals, the Directorate proposed the government approve the Marine Economic Development Strategy for 2030 with a vision to 2045 and allow the ministry to develop and implement a pilot project on marine aquaculture development in 2019-2020.
