Vung Tau city in the southern province of Ba Ria Vung Tau officially become a member of the Tourism Promotion Organization for Asia Pacific Cities (TPO) at the recent ninth TPO General Assembly held in Busan, South Korea.

As the 124th member of the organization, Vung Tau will have the opportunity to promote its image through a number of news channels and activities connecting cities and provinces in the Asia Pacific organized by the TPO, such as the General Assembly, conferences, seminars, and exhibitions, according to Vice Chairman of the Vung Tau City People’s Committee Hoang Vu Thanh. These events usually attract a lot of participants and TPO’s media channels also welcome a large number of visitors.

The TPO Advisory Board will also help the city enhance its competitiveness in the tourism industry, develop tourism products, and train experts and students in the area of tourism, while offering the locality data and forecasts about the Asia-Pacific tourism market.

Having joined the TPO, the organization immediately asked the city to name its three most famous places for sightseeing, culture, and tourism, as well as provide specific and detailed guides for visitors about what to eat, where to go and stay, and other information on visiting Vung Tau, which will be published on the TPO website. As a TPO member, Vung Tau will also provide support for visitors from other cities with TPO membership.

TPO membership will also enable Vung Tau to exchange and learn from other members in tourism development and improvements to State management over tourism, according to Mr. Thanh. This is also an opportunity for the city to foster development cooperation with other TPO members to create a thriving community in terms of tourism development in the Asia-Pacific region, thereby raising tourism revenue and making tourism a key economic sector of the city.

The TPO is an international organization established in 2002 with the blessing of the fifth Asia-Pacific City Summit (APCS) in Fukuoka, Japan. It was created as an inter-city network to promote exchange and the development of the tourism industry in major cities in the Asia-Pacific region. Members now include 125 city governments and some 50 non-government entities representing tourism-related associations, educational and research institutes, and the private sector from ten countries and territories: South Korea, Japan, China, Taiwan (China), Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, the Philippines, Thailand, and Vietnam. Vietnam has six cities in the network: Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Hai Phong, Da Nang, Da Lat, and Vung Tau. Ho Chi Minh City is the only Vietnamese representative elected to the TPO Executive Committee.
