Hanoi is estimated to have welcomed 2.53 million visitors in August and more than 19.32 million in the first eight months of this year, increases of 10.7 per cent and 9.5 per cent, respectively, year-on-year, according to the city’s Department of Tourism.

International arrivals totaled some 541,311 in August and 4.27 million in the first eight months, up 17.5 per cent and 10.5 per cent.

The total number of overnight stays is expected to reach some 15.04 million by domestic visitors and 3 million by foreigners, up 7.7 per cent and 9.2 per cent, respectively, against the same period last year, contributing to the city’s tourism revenue of VND67,220 billion ($2.9 billion), up 31.1 per cent year-on-year.

The number of visitors to the capital has seen an average rise of 10.2 per cent for four consecutive years, since 2016, with some 2 million more visitors each year, contributing over 30 per cent of the total visitors in the country, according to the department.

The increase in visitors also increases occupancy rates at accommodation providers. Occupancy rates in the city’s hospitality sector increased from 59.02 per cent in 2016 to 64.2 per cent in the first eight months of this year, 2.87 per cent higher than in 2018. Occupancy at four and five-star hotels is about 80 per cent on average.

Total revenue from tourists is also growing, averaging 12.1 per cent and contributing 12-15 per cent to the country’s total.

Hanoi spent $1 million on promoting its beauty and tourism on CNN in 2017 and 2018, both of which improved awareness about the capital and attracted more visitors. Fifteen short video clips about Hanoi are being broadcast on CNN this year, presenting its different beauty to the world.

Hanoi targets welcoming 28.95 million this year, a year-on-year increase of 10.1 per cent, including 7 million international arrivals, up 17 per cent. It expects to see overnight stays by 21.92 million domestic visitors and 4.93 million by international visitors, an increase of 8 per cent in both compared to 2018. Total revenue is targeted at VND103.807 trillion ($4.46 billion), an increase of 34 per cent against 2018.
