Vietnamese design company H&P Architects recently won an award at the Architizer A+Awards 2018 which is also known as an "Oscar" in the architecture sector.

The Brick Cave, a house built by H&P Architects in a suburban commune in Hanoi, was a July Winner and Popular Choice Winner in the categories of Private House and Architecture + Brick.

This year, more than 5,000 entries from over 100 countries competed. As one of the few works that won in those two categories, The Brick Cave will also appear in the special architecture edition of one of Phaidon's well-known publications.

The Brick Cave was built in 2007 on a 300sq.m area in one of Hanoi's suburban communes that's undergone a rapid process of urbanization. It was designed with the philosophy that it will help shape a place similar to the natural environment in an artificial manner. The proposed structure of the house resembles a cave.

The overall structure is made up of and enclosed by two layers of brick wall that meet one another at an intersection. The two built-in layers of wall function as a filter that eliminates the adverse aspects of the external environment (sunshine from the west, dust, and noise) and brings nature (light, rain, wind) inside. The top of the outer wall is tilted inward diagonally in different ways in order to create better viewing angles for the general landscape of the area.

Bricks are a familiar local material and that's widely used in rural areas of Vietnam.

The Brick Cave encompasses a chain of space interconnected with one another with random apertures gradually shifting from openness/publicity to closeness/privacy and vice versa. The combination of “close” and “open” creates diverse relations with the surroundings helping to blur the boundaries between in and out, houses and streets, and human and nature.

Last year, H&P Architects won at “BE friendly space” and received a “special mention” for two works, one in Quang Ninh and one in Hanoi.

The Architizer A+Awards is organized annually to honor the year’s best architectural works. Its mission is to nurture the appreciation of architecture around the world and champion its potential for a positive impact on everyday life.
