The first Vietnam International Travel Mart (VITM) Can Tho 2019, the largest of its kind in the Mekong Delta, is taking place in Can Tho city from November 29 to December 1.

Jointly held by the city’s People’s Committee and the Vietnam Tourism Association, VITM Can Tho 2019 aims to become an annual tourism event in the Delta. The highlight will be the Mekong Delta Tourism Development Tourism Forum, which will offer solutions for rapid tourism development and making it a key economic sector of the Mekong Delta, while turning Can Tho in particular into a leading tourist center in the country.

The event features over 300 pavilions set up by 400 travel businesses, hotels, service providers, and tourism associations from 20 cities and provinces nationwide as well as six foreign countries and territories. Thousands of tourism promotion products, including domestic and international tours, hotel rooms, airline tickets, and entrance tickets, are being offered to visitors.

The International Food Festival also counts among the activities at VITM Can Tho 2019, with 80 stalls from companies both inside and outside of the country introducing specialties from Vietnam’s three regions prepared by culinary artisans.

The Vietnam Tourism Association will launch a program at the fair to protect the environment and reduce the use of plastic products.

A forum on developing tourism in the Mekong Delta was held on November 29, followed by a workshop introducing tourism products in the region on November 30 and a ceremony to honor outstanding travel businesses and individuals on December 1.

Visitor numbers and tourism revenue in the Mekong Delta have increased more than 10 per cent each year over the last five years. The region welcomed 40.7 million tourists last year, an increase of more than 17 per cent compared to 2017. It is developing various tourism forms, such as eco-tourism, spiritual tourism, sea and island tourism, cultural and historical exploration tourism, and community-based agricultural tourism.

The Mekong Delta consists of Can Tho city and 12 provinces: Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Vinh Long, Tra Vinh, Soc Trang, Dong Thap, An Giang, Hau Giang, Kien Giang, Bac Lieu, and Ca Mau.
