A show featuring traditional music from Hanoi and the former imperial capital of Hue will open on the night January 20 at the French Culture Center in Hanoi.

With the theme “Ai Vo Xu Hue, Ai Ra Bac Thanh” (Who Comes to Hue, Comes to Bac Thanh), a lyric from ancient northern folk chamber music implying the harmony between the two region’s traditional music, folk music from the two cities will be performed, including cheo (traditional opera), ca tru (chamber music), tuong (classical drama), chau van (folk music combining trance singing and dancing), and xam (music performed by buskers), from Hanoi, and nha nhac (royal music) and ca Hue (folk music) from Hue.

The musical groups Dong kinh co nhac (Early Music of Tonkin) and Nha nhac - ca Hue Phu Xuan (Music from the Palace of Hue) will present repertoires from the existing and former capitals. Thanh Tam, the last vocalist of the Royal Court of Hue, who grew up in a royal music troupe under the Nguyen Dynasty’s Emperor Bao Dai’s (1949-1955), will be joined by popular artistes from Hanoi. Visitors will also have the chance to enjoy the sophisticated sounds of dan nhi Hue (two-stringed bowed musical instrument) and ho xam Hue (a style of singing).

Other veteran artistes from Hanoi will also present a collection of well-known folk music from the capital.

Hue’s royal music and Hanoi’s chamber music have been recognized as world intangible cultural heritages by UNESCO.

The show will start at 8pm. Tickets are available at the French Culture Center (L’Espace), 24 Trang Tien, Hoan Kiem district, in Hanoi, from VND100,000 to VND210,000 for members and students.
