Airport to bring convenience to visitors to province with among Vietnam's most war relic sites.

Authorities in central Quang Tri province have conducted a field survey on the construction of Quang Tri Airport.

The airport has been approved by the Prime Minister and placed in the adjusted planning for the development of the aviation industry to 2020 and view to 2030.

It is expected to open sometime in the 2020-2030 period, on 312 ha. It will be 93km from Dong Hoi Airport in neighboring Quang Binh province and about 88km from Phu Bai Airport in Thua Thien Hue province.

The Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam proposed building the civil and military airport in Gio Quang commune, 7 km from the provincial capital, Dong Ha. The runway will be 2,400 meters long and 45 meters wide and be able to cater to A320, A321, and similar aircraft.

There will be four slots in the aircraft parking area, with land set aside if there is a need to build another taxiway. The terminal’s capacity will be 1 million passengers a year, with land also been set aside for expansion. Estimated investment is over VND5.7 trillion ($247 million), to come from the State budget, the private sector, and other sources.

Vietnam will then have 28 airports. The Quang Tri project aims to further complete the country’s transport network and boost the province’s socioeconomic and tourism development. There is currently no airport in Quang Tri, and visitors must fly to Quang Binh or Hue and then travel by road for two or three hours.

The project is also expected to attract investment in key economic zones and spiritual tourism sites, exploiting the potential of Quang Tri, which also boasts a 75-km coastline.

Located in the narrowest portion of central Vietnam, Quang Tri was the northern-most province in the former South Vietnam, bordering the old DMZ that separated North and South Vietnam until 1975. It therefore remains the most meaningful of historical sites in Vietnam. Relics of Vietnam’s revolutionary struggle include Hien Luong Bridge, the 17th parallel, Khe Sanh, and the Vinh Moc underground tunnels.

Quang Tri welcomed over 2 million visitors in 2019, including 176,000 foreigners, up 11.4 per cent and 4.7 per cent against 2018.
