The Hanoi People’s Committee has approved the construction of an underground parking lot at Thu Le Park in Ba Dinh district, with the Him Lam BC Investment JSC to invest over VND1,700 billion ($72.86 million). Completion is scheduled for the fourth quarter of next year.

The project will include a commercial area on an area of over 16,100 sq m. The underground lot is about 72,000 sq m with six floors, including a floor for operations.

Hanoi Zoo, which is already in Thu Le Park, and Him Lam BC will both use the above ground area.

The car park is hoped to help cater to the growing demand for car parking in the capital and ease the load on its transport infrastructure.

Some 6.5 million vehicles of all types are on the city’s streets, including those from nearby provinces. Figures from the Hanoi Department of Transport show that annual growth in vehicle numbers averages 10.2 per cent for motor cars and 6.7 per cent for motorbikes.

Growth in the land area used for transport infrastructure, meanwhile, is just 0.25-0.3 per cent per year, with the center of the city bearing the brunt of the overload.

Areas specifically for parking meet only 8-10 per cent of demand, with the remaining 90-92 per cent of vehicles being parked wherever possible.
