The former imperial capital of Hue in the central province of Thua Thien Hue plans to open an environmentally-friendly bike service for tourists.

Some 400 bikes will be provided in the inner-city areas and some 2,000 in suburban areas. The project is expected to be completed before the Hue Festival 2020 in April next year, which will attract a large number of visitors.

Visitors need to install an app on their smartphone to access the service, which uses QR codes to open bikes and GPS to know their location.

The service will help visitors travel along the Huong (Perfume) River in the city’s center or other local tourist spots.

Discovering Hue by bicycle is a new tourism trend favored by both domestic and foreign visitors, according to a survey conducted by the Hue People’s Committee. The new service provides them with more options in addition to electric buses or boat rides along the river.

It also aims to help reduce emissions from motor vehicles and pollution as well as create a green and smart image for the city among international friends.

The Thua Thien Hue Provincial People’s Committee also plans to open more pedestrian malls to the north and south of the Huong River to give more options for tourists to discover the area and will also develop other public transport means and environmentally-friendly toilets and bins for a green and friendly tourism environment.

Earlier this year, Hoi An ancient town in central Quang Nam province also launched a pilot bicycle sharing program, to encourage residents to move from petrol power to pedal power as an environmentally-friendly transport solution, preserve the heritage and tourist sites in the town, and contribute to efforts to build a green tourism site and protect the environment. Nearby Da Nang also plans to apply a similar model to cut traffic congestion in the city center and curb pollution and encourage healthy activities.

Thua Thien Hue welcomed some 3.7 million visitors in the first nine months of this year, including over 1.5 million foreigners, up 5.9 per cent and 9.4 per cent, respectively, against the same period last year.
