The People’s Committee of District 1 in Ho Chi Minh City on August 8 opened five taxi ranks in the city center for the first time.

Each rank is recognizable by a yellow taxi stand, a waiting area on the sidewalk, and a line for taxis to stop and pick up customers. Each taxi has about two minutes to pick up and drop off customers.

The five ranks are located at 16 Alexandre De Rhodes Street, the main gate at Children’s Hospital 2 at 14 Ly Tu Trong Street, 29 Ly Tu Trong Street, 3 Han Thuyen Street, and the gate to the Nguyen Du Sport and Physical Training Club, opposite 139 Nguyen Du Street.

The pilot, proposed by the city’s Department of Transport, aims to offer passengers more options and limit the situation of people hailing taxis in the street and creating traffic congestion. It is also expected to reduce some taxi drivers scamming tourists.

During the pilot period of six months, the district will collect public opinion on improving the quality of the ranks. If it works effectively, it will be applied to other areas of the city.

There are about 12,500 “traditional” taxis and more than 5,000 Grab taxis in the city. Due to the shortage of parking areas, most usually use areas in front of restaurants, hotels, and other popular places to pick up and drop off passengers, causing serious traffic jams. On central roads such as Bui Thi Xuan, Ton That Tung, Hai Ba Trung, Pasteur, Nguyen Thi Minh Khai, Cong Quynh, Nguyen Trai, and others, there are often more taxis than other cars.
