A festival honoring the worshipping of Mother Goddesses will take place in Hanoi from November 9 to 13.

With the participation of 23 spirit mediums, the event is organized by the Thang Long Cultural Heritage Association at Rung Temple in Long Bien district and Hao Nam Temple in Ba Dinh district.

Mediums will present the “hau dong” ritual and performance to pay tribute to 50 genies worshipped as part of the Mother Goddesses belief. In Vietnam’s Mother Goddesses worshipping practice, there are Four Palaces: Nhac Phu (Forest), Thien Phu (Heaven), Thuy Phu (Water), and Dia Phu (Earth).

The ritual to worship the Mother Goddesses is one of the main religions in Vietnam and originated from the thousand-year-old matriarchy. Hau dong, a spirit possession ritual of the Mother Goddesses religion, is a folk religious performance that holds both spiritual and folk artistic meaning.

The event aims to honor the Vietnamese tradition of worshipping Mother Goddesses, enhance spiritual lives, and preserve culture in daily life. With the participation of artist troupes, the event is expected to help promote unique indigenous culture and practices.

Within the framework of the festival, a workshop on preserving and promoting Mother Goddesses worshipping will be held at the Hao Nam Temple on November 16 by the Vietnam Music Development Center.

Vietnam’s tradition of worshipping Mother Goddesses was recognized as an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO last year.
