Timbuyt, an app for smartphones that allows users to find buses in Hanoi, has been officially launched by the Hanoi Transport Corporation (Transerco).

Working like Uber and Grab, the app allows passengers to identify the most convenient route from their location to destination and determine the arrival time.

They need only type in their location and destination and the app will provide detailed route options on a map, which helps them choose the route and the bus stop and know the distance, travel time, and number of transfers, etc.

The app also has other supportive features, such as automatic reminders when the bus arrives at a bus stop, and transit points or stops, to help passengers avoid missing a stop or taking the wrong bus.

It also offers a monthly online ticket purchase method with home delivery and updates information on route changes, service changes, new routes, and so on.

Timbuyt is available on Android and iOS with two language options, Vietnamese and English, and can be downloaded from Google PlayStore or Apple Store. The app also works without an internet connection.

According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Trung, General Director of Transerco, its bus operations center handles 92 routes and over 1,000 buses in Hanoi. All buses are equipped with a control system, where their status is transferred by online data to the center. Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) buses also send images from their cameras and those installed along the route to the center. Software at the center updates vehicle information and traffic jams to help determine the best route.

Transerco is piloting more camera installations on buses and intelligent OBU (On-Board-Unit) systems, with direct interaction between the center and drivers to improve service quality.

According to Mr. Vu Van Vien, Director of the Hanoi Transport and Traffic Department, the city is attempting to find solutions to cutting traffic congestion, including limiting personal transport vehicles while boosting public transport.

The smart bus operating center and the timbuyt app are not only solutions to improve public transport quality but also a roadmap for smart city development. Transport infrastructure and technology make sustainable traffic solutions possible, according to Mr. Vien.
