The Hanoi International Heritage Marathon will take place on October 20 in Vietnam’s capital.

More than a thousand years old, Hanoi is the political, economic, cultural, arts, and tourism capital of Vietnam, meaning the marathon is a connection of modern-day sports activities with the glorious and heroic past and heritage of Hanoi.

The marathon is the first and only of its kind to run through the old town through three main historical attractions - Hoan Kiem Lake, the Red River, and West Lake - so that athletes have a new and interesting experience when it comes to historical values, cultural values, the lives of Hanoians, and a modern presence through each step. It is a unique way to attract athletes from all over the world.

About 7,000 runners, including 1,500 foreigners from 58 countries and territories, will compete - triple number in the first holding last year.

They will compete in four categories: the 42-km marathon, the 21-km half marathon, and 10-km and 5-km runs, which all start at Ly Thai To Park in Hoan Kiem district in the city’s center.

With a new and improved course, the event is expected to promote the beauty of Hanoi among international friends and contribute to boosting the city’s tourism industry as well as encourage and develop sports in a sustainable and broad way for all ages and classes of Vietnamese people, to improve their health and stature and develop professional, semi-professional, and amateur local athletes.

The race is standardized and certified as Class A by experts from the International Association of Athletics Federations and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (IAAF-AIMS).

This run is also recognized as one of only two national marathons in Vietnam and is a part of the official competition system of the Vietnam Athletics Federation.

The event is co-organized by the Hanoi Department of Culture and Sports, the Vietnam Athletics Federation, the Dai Bieu Nhan Dan (People’s Deputies) newspaper, the DHA Limited Company, and the Vietnam Prosperity Joint Stock Commercial Bank (VPBank).
