To mark 15 years in Vietnam and an 80 year-journey worldwide, the finale of the 12th annual Canon PhotoMarathon 2017 kicked off in Hanoi on November 5.

Similar competitions were held in Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City earlier, with entries from 1,200 and 7,000 hobbyists, amateurs, and professional photographers.

Nearly 2,300 contestants turned up for the event in Hanoi to vie for a share of the record prize pool of VND1.4 billion ($61,400) by finding beauty in the everyday lives of citizens in the thousand-year-old city.

Leading Vietnamese and Vietnam-based photographers Mr. Hai Dong, Mr. Hai Thanh, and Mr. Justin Mott, who spent this year’s PhotoMarathon in the judging booth, joined contestants on the narrow streets of Hanoi to capture images of their own and select their favorite entries under three themes: Smile of Hanoi, Minimalism, and Life on the Pavement.

Along with their fellow winners from Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, the Hanoi victor will represent Vietnam at Canon PhotoMarathon Asia Championship in Japan along with 16 regional champions. Winners have the opportunity to win awards of up to $5,000 and be famous throughout Asia.

All registration fees go to a charity program called “For the Future Generation”, with the purpose of building schools for poor students, making photography a “bridge” and a meaningful “instrument” to support the Vietnamese community.
