The first-ever Italian Film Festival is taking place in Hanoi from September 20 to 23 as part of the Embassy of Italy’s activities to celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Italy and Vietnam.

The highlight of the week will be the appearance of renowned Italian director Paolo Genovese, who will attend several exchanges with young Vietnamese filmmakers and joined the event’s opening ceremony at CGV Vincom Center Ba Trieu on September 20.

Three of his films - “Perfect Strangers”, “The Place”, and “A Perfect Family” - will be screened in the capital. The two comedies and one drama entertainingly draw attention to some of the most dramatic developments in Italian society, focusing on the key values of family and friendship as well as on the dynamics of major human relations as seen through the lenses of everyone’s personal expectations.

The three screenings, with free entry on a first come first served basis, will take place as follows: “Perfect Strangers” at 7pm on September 20 at CGV Cinema Vincom Center, 191 Ba Trieu, Hoan Kiem district, and “The Place” at 2pm on September 22 and “A Perfect Family” at 8pm on September 23 at Kim Dong Cinema, 19 Hang Bai, Hoan Kiem district.

Italy has greatly contributed to the development of contemporary cinema since 1896, becoming one of the leading superpowers in the field. The country is also home to many famous actors, directors and skilled technicians who have received awards at prestigious festivals around the world.

After successful events in the last few months focused on music, fashion, literature, education, history and art, the Embassy of Italy now offers Vietnamese audiences a glimpse of the country’s renowned film industry.

The embassy has organized many initiatives, meetings, roundtables, or promotional events in recent years aimed at bringing Italy’s movie culture to Vietnam. In 2015 it introduced the “Movie move” initiative for the first time and in 2016 participated as country guest of honor at the Hanoi International Film Festival.

Since Vietnam has always shown great interest in the cinema industry and film-making fields, progressively training a promising batch of skilled technicians, it has become an increasingly important area of cooperation between the two countries.

In parallel with the Italian Film Festival, the General Director for Economic and Cultural Promotion at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Ambassador Vincenzo De Luca, is paying an official visit to Vietnam. He will focus not only on strengthening cultural cooperation, in signing a bilateral Executive Program on Cultural Cooperation 2018-2021, but also on the promotion of top-quality Italian audiovisual and cultural offerings in Vietnam.
