A pilot service using double-decker buses began in Hanoi on June 30 with six other cities and provinces to follow.

Called the “City Tour” and conducted by Hanoi Transerco, the 16-45 seat buses will pass famous attractions in the capital such as the Opera House, the Temple of Literature, and the Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum.

The five-year pilot in Hanoi was approved by the Prime Minister. The buses can carry up to 45 passengers and cost VND7 billion ($310,000) each.

After the pilot is underway and public opinion gathered, it is expected more buses will come into operation within the next two months. Ten buses are to hit the streets in July.

The buses are expected to be introduced in central Da Nang city shortly, while tourism companies in Ho Chi Minh City are reluctant to uses double-decker buses on its narrow and congested streets.

The open-top, double-decker buses already ply tourism routes in regional countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Japan, and China.
