South Korean conglomerate the CJ Group presented 115 scholarships to students in difficult family circumstances striving for education excellence in the central highlands’ Lam Dong province at a ceremony held on December 27.

The group’s scholarship program is an annual affair, demonstrating its corporate responsibility to the community and society.

Attending the ceremony were Mr. Phan Van Da, Deputy Chairman of the Lam Dong Provincial People’s Committee and Deputy Director of the Lam Dong Department of Foreign Affairs. On behalf of the CJ Group, Mr. Jung Young Soo, Senior CJ Global Adviser, and Mr. Chang Bok Sang, CEO and Chairman of the CJ Group in Vietnam were in attendance, joined by more than 200 guests and students.

The CJ Group has granted more than 600 scholarships to poor students in Lam Dong since 2013. This year it granted 150 to over-achieving students from the elementary to university level. Scholarships are worth an estimated $21,550 in total, given directly to the students to help with their tuition and living costs.

It plans to expand the scope of the scholarship program, including students in provinces where the group does business.

Since the establishment of a representative office in Ho Chi Minh City in 1998, the CJ Group has expanded to more than 17 business lines in Vietnam, from food, food ingredients, fresh bread, cakes and cinnamon to film, television, home shopping, animal feed production, animal husbandry, and animal breeding, investing some $880 million.

National Assembly Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan visited South Korea in early December and met with the CEO of the CJ Group. During their talks, leaders from the CJ Group emphasized the importance of community service activities and committed to carrying out volunteer activities for the Vietnamese people.

A few months ago it opened the CJ Vina Agri Feed Production Plant at the An Hoa Industrial Park in south-central Binh Dinh province, following its first such plant in northern Ha Nam province. CJ Vina Agri Binh Dinh has total investment of $13.6 million and a construction area of 4.1 ha, with capacity estimated at 72,000 tons per year.
