Japan’s leading retailer, the AEON Group, broke ground on March 11 at its shopping mall in Hanoi’s Ha Dong district, which will join its first in the capital, in Long Bien district, and be its fifth nationwide.

Covering nearly 9.8 ha in Duong Noi ward, the mall is scheduled to open by the end of 2019. It will have three floors with a combined floor area of nearly 150,000 sq m, and be able to accommodate 200 shops, including an AEON supermarket. The total floor area for business activities may be up to 74,000 sq m.

Kajima - Hoa Binh has been assigned as the general contractor for design and construction.

The mall is located on the 16.7-ha Ha Dong International Hospital project, which is being developed by the BIM Group. The Hanoi People’s Committee last year approved the adjustment of this project, which converted 9.5 ha into a commercial center.

Addressing the breaking ground ceremony, Mr. Akio Yoshida, Director of the AEON Mall Co., highlighted the significance of the project, pledging that his company will bring its expertise and experience to contribute to the community’s development. “This project, with a vision of ‘making the future for Ha Dong district’, is expected to become the biggest trade center in the area,” he said.

Ambassador of Japan to Vietnam, H.E. Kunio Umeda, said the project will contribute to not only improving the living standards of local residents but also to promoting cooperation between Vietnam and Japan. “Japan wants to cooperate with Vietnamese organizations and individuals, thus strengthening the Japan-Vietnam comprehensive partnership,” he said.

In Vietnam since 2009, AEON opened its first shopping center in Ho Chi Minh City in 2014. The 250-year-old Japanese retail group currently has four malls in Vietnam: one in Hanoi’s Long Bien district, two in Ho Chi Minh City, and one in southern Binh Duong province.

Last September, AEON Mall Vietnam signed an MoU with the Hai Phong Tourism and Trade Promotion Center to build a mall on 9.3 ha in Le Chan district in northern Hai Phong city.

The project has estimated investment of $180 million and is expected to be completed by 2020 and become the sixth AEON Mall in Vietnam.

When AEON Mall decided on Ha Dong for its second mall in Hanoi it heated up the district’s real estate sector and encouraged the building of infrastructure projects in the area.
