MWG picks up award

The MobileWorld Investment JSC (MWG) was the only company in Vietnam to receive the prestigious “One of the Top 5 Best-of-the-Best Retailers” award, as voted by Retail Asia magazine and Euromonitor Market Research Group. In the first nine months of this year, MWG recorded net sales of VND47.6 trillion ($2.06 billion) and after-tax profit of VND1.63 trillion ($70.8 million), increases of 55 and 34 per cent, respectively, year-on-year.


SBV: Bitcoin illegal

According to the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV), the issuance, supplement, and use of Bitcoin and other virtual currencies for legal payment is prohibited in Vietnam. It has since coordinated additional penalties for use of these now illegal crypto-currencies. In a statement released on October 28, the SBV affirmed its implementation of the Prime Minister’s direction to develop and improve a legal framework to regulate the status of virtual currencies among a list of acknowledged, legal, and cashless means of payment.


Inspectors raid Khaisilk

A team of anti-trade fraud officials carried out a snap inspection of a Khaisilk boutique in Hanoi following allegations that the company had sold silk made in China bearing a “Khaisilk - Made in Vietnam” label. The team comprised members of the National Steering Committee for the Prevention of Smuggling, Trade Fraud, and Fake Goods, also known as National Steering Committee 389, under the Ministry of Industry and Trade, and police.


Bangkok Airways conducts first Bangkok - Phu Quoc Island flight

The first Bangkok Airways flight from Bangkok landed on Phu Quoc Island on October 29, carrying 63 passengers. The direct flight takes about one hour and 45 minutes. The carrier will conduct four flights on the route weekly, on Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday, using 70-seat twin-engine turboprop ATR72-600 aircraft.


Auchan opens fourth Auchan Golden Vinaconex supermarket in Hanoi

French retail giant Auchan has opened its fourth Auchan Golden Vinaconex supermarket in Hanoi. “We will continue to expand our supermarket system by 2020 to cover the north with 20 supermarkets,” said Mr. Gilbert Infantes, Board Member at Auchan Group. Entering Vietnam in 2012, Auchan has opened 16 supermarkets with 850 employees in cities such as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, and Tay Ninh. By 2018 it plans to have nearly 40 supermarkets and two hypermarkets in the country.


Da Nang’s IT Park No. 1 ready

Da Nang has basically prepared the site of IT Park No.1 and is preparing to break ground at Software Park No. 2, together with the establishment of appropriate policies, to be ready for IT enterprises to invest.


10M FDI up handsomely

Total FDI attraction, including newly-registered, additional capital, and share purchases totaled $28.2 billion in the first ten months of this year, the Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) has reported. Total FDI attraction saw a year-on-year increase of 37.4 per cent. As at October 20, 2,070 FDI projects had business licenses with investment of $16.3 billion (up 32.9 per cent) and 1,001 had added capital totaling $7.27 billion (up 35.9 per cent). Foreign investors also made 4,156 share purchases worth $4.67 billion (up 58.8 per cent).
