HCMC approves planning of second science & tech park

The Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee has approved the 1/2000 scale plan for the city’s second science and technology park, to be built in District 9 at a cost of around VND4.3 trillion ($188 million). The 200-ha park will have distinct zones for research and the application of advanced technologies, the fabrication of high-quality products, the incubation of startups, and high-tech training for workers. It will also collaborate with the park to adopt the latter’s latest technologies.

Satra and startup foundation agree to deal

The Saigon Trading Group (Satra) and the Startup Vietnam Foundation (SVF), a Ho Chi Minh City-headquartered non-profit fund, have arrived at a deal to support startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). SVF will assist startups and SMEs in seizing opportunities to become suppliers of material and processed products to the supermarkets, convenience stores, and wholesale markets of Satra.

Korean-style bar opens in Hanoi

Hite Jinro Co., the leading liquor producer in South Korea, announced on October 9 that it has opened its first overseas soju pub in Vietnam and will open a second next year, with a goal to opening over 20 such bars in the country by 2020. The Korean-style street bar, called pojangmacha, opened in the capital Hanoi with a localized concept and design, after running a pop-up store in late 2016.

Vietnamese second-most optimistic in Asia-Pacific

Vietnamese consumers are the second-most optimistic in Asia-Pacific markets, according to the latest survey on consumer confidence conducted by MasterCard. Vietnam’s Consumer Confidence Index stood at a high of 90.8 points, just after Cambodia with 93.1 points. The average score for Asia-Pacific countries was 66.9, a slight increase from the 62.7 points reported six months ago, mainly due to bright prospects in the stock and job markets.

Government adopts tourism action plan

The government has introduced an action program for the implementation of the Politburo’s Resolution No. 08-NQ/TW dated January 16, 2017, on developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector. The action program highlights the need to raise public awareness about tourism development via disseminating the contents of the resolution to ministries, sectors, localities, all-level Party organizations, Fatherland Fronts, businesses, and the people, particularly the Party’s new stance on the nature of the tourism industry and the role played by the tourism sector in boosting the development of other sectors.

Finance ministry at top again in Vietnam ICT Index

According to the latest information from the Ministry of Information and Communications, the Ministry of Finance continues to lead ministries and sectors on the readiness index of the application of information technology in Vietnam (Vietnam ICT Index) in 2017. In the rankings of ministries, ministerial-level agencies, and government-attached agencies having public services, the Ministry of Finance ranked first for the fifth time in a row, followed by Vietnam Social Security, the Ministry of Education and Training, and the Ministry of Information and Communications. Standing in the last three positions are the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Ministry of Science and Technology, and the Government Inspectorate.

Acecook building HCMC office block

Acecook Vietnam has begun construction of a new office block at Lot II-2, CN8 Road, in the Tan Binh Industrial Zone in Tan Phu district, Ho Chi Minh City. The new office block has six floors on a construction area of 4,000 sq m, with total investment of $12 million. It will be the workplace of over 400 employees.
